About Alice Waters
Along with her duties as executive chef and owner of Chez Panisse, Waters is deeply involved with developing an edible garden at one of Berkeley’s middle schools. This project, according to Waters, “involves the students directly in planting, gardening, harvesting, cooking, and eating, while illuminating the vital relationship of food to their lives, and teaching them respect for each other and for the planet.” The Edible Schoolyard project plays a vital role in the school’s curriculum and serves as a model for schools across the country. Learn more about the "Edible Schoolyard" here. She has also set up the Chez Panisse Foundation to attract support for educational and cultural programs that promote sustainable agriculture.
