Food for Thought
Festival 2003
Sharing The Bounty in Our Backyard
A Garden Produce Donation Drive
Sponsored By
The Fifth Annual Food for Thought Festival,
Plant A Row For The Hungry, and
Community Action Coalition for South Central WI, Inc (CAC)
Gardeners in and near Madison will be participating in the Fifth Annual Food for Thought Festival by sharing their extra garden produce with people in need.
Gardeners should bring their produce with them to the Festival, just off the Capitol Square, at the corner of Doty St. & MLK Jr. Blvd. The Festival is on Saturday, September 20th from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. CAC's refrigerated truck will be there to take donations to soup kitchens and food pantries in Dane County.
For more information,
contact Janet Parker at 608-246-4730 extension 218 or janetp@cacscw.org.
Children and adult gardeners will be part of the donation drive. Young Madison gardeners Tristan and Carlton Hemphill, along with their 4-H group called Diligent Doers, decided to grow food to donate this summer, in their plots at a community garden. They worked with the Plant a Row for the Hungry program to decide which crops to plant - cabbage, brussel sprouts, squash, pumpkins, and potatoes - crops that they know food pantries can use.
(Members of the press can call Janet Parker to set up an interview or photo shoot with Tristan and Carlton at their garden plot in west Madison.)
Community gardeners in south Madison will also be involved. Through the Boys and Girls Club, a group of elementary school students are growing food in their own plots at Quann Community Garden near the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum. Each week they deliver flowers and vegetables to elderly neighbors. For the Food for Thought Festival, they will harvest produce to donate to people in need throughout Madison. These children are also available for visits and interviews at their plots; contact Janet Parker.
Gardeners can also drop off extra produce at a food pantry nearest them. Just call CAC Food Resources at 246-4730 ext. 208 to locate
your nearest food pantry.
