About REAP

Vision Statement - Our vision is to ensure a food system for southern Wisconsin that is healthful, sustainable, and just.

Mission Statement - We will develop a comprehensive understanding of the southern Wisconsin Food System through research, education, action, and open dialogue with participants from all sectors of the food system. We
will engage participants in projects and the institution of public policies to ensure a food system that is healthful, sustainable, and just.

Food System: refers to food-related processes, transactions, and policies that connect agricultural production, food processing, trade, transportation, marketing, preparation, consumption, and waste management.

Healthful: refers to the promotion of the health and well-being of all participants in the food system as well as the system as a whole. This includes ensuring that foods are nutritionally sound, that foods are free of or have safe levels of pesticides, bacteria, or other toxic residues, and that food production techniques minimize exposure to health-related risks.

Sustainable: refers to general styles of production, processing, and distribution that protect the environment and economic viability for future generations and support a high quality of life in the communities in which food is produced, processed, and distributed.

Just: relates to Consumers and Providers

Consumers: All consumers in the food system should have access to an adequate amount of food that is nutritionally sound, culturally appropriate, and affordable.

Providers: All people who work in the food system - including family farmers; agricultural farm workers; and owners, managers, and wage laborers in production, distribution, and sales - should receive adequate remuneration and have safe working conditions.

Open Dialogue and Engagement: refers to communication that is respectful of diverse opinions and people, and is carried on in an atmosphere where multipleh needs are considered and addressed, and participants strive for understanding. The goal is to ffoster action through an inclusive and mutually respectful process. This implies responsibility on the part of all participants to attempt to resolve issues and to commit to participating in the process.
