MMSD Food Policy Development and Wellness Policy Resources

During the 2005-2006 school year, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) created a Food Policy that impacts the nutritional quality and availability of foods for students throughout the district. This Food Policy has been integrated into the broader Wellness Policy that all school districts are federally mandated to develop by the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. The creation of these policies provides a wonderful opportunity for schools to systematically assess and improve the food, health and learning environments of our students.

Some parents, health professionals, school staff, and students provided input during the creation of the policy. Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch was invited to provide input for this policy as well. We advocated for a policy that addressed the quality and content of the school meal program as well as foods originating outside of Food Service operations, so that students across the district are provided more fresh food opportunities and have access to consistent food and nutrition education.

Below you’ll find links to a letter and policy recommendations Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch provided to MMSD administrators and school board members. Also provided are additional resources and information related to Wellness Policies, including sample policies from other school districts. We hope school districts, including Madison's, will see their Wellness Policies as works in progress and will continue to assess and improve upon them.
